Sharkwater in US theaters in September

Just wanted to let you know I received a reply to an email I sent concerning the US screening distribution of the documentary Sharkwater. I was told that it will be in theaters in the US in September, which is still a ways off but at least it is coming hopefully to a theater near you.

Rescue Diver (or was it Victim) Weekend

Spent the weekend taking my PADI Resuce Diver course with Southwest Scuba. This was a course I was supposed to take back in November but a nasty ear infection kept me on the sidelines.

Rob and Jen really put on a great course; which requires camping all weekend at the Lake, I'm not much of a camper. It was "Real" as in the rescue scenarios that are thrown at you throughout the weekend going above and beyone the ususal PADI standards, and was "Fun" hanging out with some divers and the camping wasn't half bad, but it wasn't "Real Fun". It was a long tiring weekend mentally and physically. Midnight (my dog) was even ready to go home by Sunday morning.

I don't want to get into great detail in case some future victims, errrr... Rescue Students read my blog. Wish I would have taken some pictures, but actually didn't really have much time.

Logged dives #123-126 during the course.

Sharkwater Documentary Film

I wanted to share with you a glimpse of a documentary that will hopefully come to your area in the near future. Currently it is only being screened in Canada and New York.

Synopsis:

For filmmaker Rob Stewart, exploring sharks began as an underwater adventure. What it turned into was a beautiful and dangerous life journey into the balance of life on earth.

Driven by passion fed from a lifelong fascination with sharks, Stewart debunks historical stereotypes and media depictions of sharks as bloodthirsty, man-eating monsters and reveals the reality of sharks as pillars in the evolution of the seas.

Filmed in visually stunning, high definition video, Sharkwater takes you into the most shark rich waters of the world, exposing the exploitation and corruption surrounding the world's shark populations in the marine reserves of Cocos Island, Costa Rica and the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador.

In an effort to protect sharks, Stewart teams up with renegade conservationist Paul Watson of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. Their unbelievable adventure together starts with a battle between the Sea Shepherd and shark poachers in Guatemala, resulting in pirate boat rammings, gunboat chases, mafia espionage, corrupt court systems and attempted murder charges, forcing them to flee for their lives.

Through it all, Stewart discovers these magnificent creatures have gone from predator to prey, and how despite surviving the earth's history of mass extinctions, they could easily be wiped out within a few years due to human greed.

Stewart's remarkable journey of courage and determination changes from a mission to save the world's sharks, into a fight for his life, and that of humankind.

SHARKWATER

"Sharkwater will change the way people view sharks and the ocean. It will open their eyes... and, hopefully, their hearts."
Cristopher Chin, Deeper Blue

“Impassioned and strikingly beautiful” – Eye Weekly

“Compelling…part gorgeous, ethereal swim with the sharks…part message movie about the slaughter of the innocents.”
Bruce Kirkland, Toronto Sun

“A simple – but ravishingly beautiful – natural history film a la ‘March of the Penguins’”
Ron Foley, Atlantic Film Festival

“A politically charged, edge-of-your seat environmental thriller”

“Like ‘An Inconvenient Truth’, it rates as utterly essential viewing for anyone who cares about the state of the environment and the future of the world as a whole."

“An electrifying environmental thriller”
Ron Foley Macdonald, Infomonkey.net

Making of:

Here is a brief list of things you can do to help sharks:

• Dive and snorkel with sharks. The more money that goes into shark
tourism the more people will realize the value of living sharks.

• Refuse to eat shark fin soup and don’t eat at restaurants that serve it;
encourage others to do the same.

• Seventeen countries have already banned shark finning. Find out if your
country is one of them. If not, write your local government official
asking them to ban shark finning.

• Demand that your country also stop the importation of shark fins.

• Start a letter writing campaign to the Secretary General of the UN
requesting international bans on shark finning and the importation of
fins.

• Keep informed of the issue online at: www.seashepherd.org,

Scorpion Bay, Lake Pleasant Scuba Video

Went to the lake and did a "last dive" at Scorpion Bay. I know I've said this a couple weeks ago, but now they have a sign saying, "This area closed Apr. 2, 2007, until further notice", it's inevitable , but we'll see if it's immediate. I brought the underwater camera along and shot some video during my scuba dive. Enjoy...
